What is the most common type of EV charger?

Class 1 and 2 connectors

The most common connector is the SAE J1772 EV plug. All electric vehicles in Canada and the United States can use this plug to charge, even Tesla vehicles with adapters. The J1772 connector is only available for Level 1 and Level 2 charging.

Class 3 connector

For fast charging, CHAdeMO and SAE Combo (also known as CCS of “combined charging system”) are the most commonly used connectors for electric vehicle manufacturers.

The two connectors are not interchangeable, which means that cars with CHAdeMO ports cannot be charged with SAE Combo plugs, and vice versa. It’s a bit like a gasoline car. You can’t fill it up with a diesel pump.
