What is a low-speed electric vehicle?

Low speed electric vehicles, also known as community electric vehicles, are defined as motor vehicles with four wheels, a gross vehicle weight rating of 3000 pounds or less, and a minimum speed of 20 miles per hour, with a maximum speed of 25 miles per hour.

Low speed electric vehicles are self-propelled mainly by electricity. They have at least three wheels in contact with the ground. They do not use handlebars for steering, display vehicle identification numbers, and meet the manufacturer’s requirements as defined in Title 49, Article 565 of the Federal Regulation.

The low-speed EV can drive on the road with a speed limit of up to 40 miles per hour. As long as the lane on the road is at least 11 feet wide, and there are two or more lanes, the Colorado Department of Transportation has determined that driving low-speed electric vehicles on the sub road will not cause major safety risks.
