What are the three types of backup power systems?

As defined in NFPA 70: National Electrical Code (NEC), emergency and backup power systems are divided into three types: emergency power, statutory backup power, and optional backup power.

Emergency power supply:

the specification requirements for operating systems critical to life safety Emergency power supply

Statutory backup power supply:

For systems that are not classified as requiring emergency power supply but whose failure may cause danger or hinder rescue or fire fighting operations, regulations require the backup power supply required by law

Optional standby power supply:

the code does not need optional standby power supply, and provides standby power supply when life safety is not dependent on system performance.

Use these parameters to identify and describe the need for emergency or standby power in building codes, fire codes, and/or reference standards. The specific requirements for the design of emergency and standby power supply systems will vary according to the type of building occupancy, use of facilities, key functions and equipment served.
