What are the components of the switch board?

A panel can consist of a single vertical structure or multiple structures, depending on the number and size of the supplied loads.

The main structure will contain the main disconnectors or main lugs and will generally contain utility and/or customer metering equipment and surge protection.

In most installations, the switchboard is mounted close to the wall and is accessible only from the front. If desired, panels can be constructed to allow front and back access. Rear access panels provide easier access for installation and maintenance, but they are usually deeper than front access only panels.

The main components of the switchboard structure are the frame, bus, over-current protection device, instrument, housing and cover. The panel frame is a metal skeleton that houses all other components. The bus is made of copper or aluminum and installed in the frame.

The bus distributes power from the incoming cable conductors to the branch circuit devices. The horizontal bus distributes power to each panel section. In contrast, the vertical bus distributes power to circuit protection devices within a single section.
