UPS communication mode 2: I2C (Inter-Integrated Circuit)

I2C (Inter-Integrated Circuit), also known as TWI (Two Wire Interface), is a serial communication protocol developed by Philips (now NXP Semiconductors) in the 1980s. I2C is a simple and flexible communication method that is widely used in short-distance device-to-device communication, especially for connecting low-speed devices such as sensors, memory, displays and microcontrollers. Because of its simple hardware requirements and flexible scalability, I2C has become an important communication standard in embedded systems and electronic devices.

Main content

Characteristics of I2C

Dual-wire communication: I2C uses only two wires (SDA and SCL), greatly simplifying the hardware design.

Multi-host support: I2C supports multi-master device connection, which can realize the network topology of multiple master devices and multiple slave devices.

Flexible rate: I2C communication rates are usually 100kHz (standard mode), 400kHz (fast mode) and 3.4MHz (high-speed mode), which can be adjusted according to different application requirements.

Address assignment: I2C supports 7-bit or 10-bit addresses, allowing multiple slave devices to be used on the same bus. Each slave device has a unique address and can connect up to 127 devices with 7-bit addresses.

Simple hardware design: The I2C protocol has relatively low hardware requirements, making it widely used in microcontrollers and other integrated circuits.

Application of I2C

Sensor interface: such as temperature sensor, accelerometer, etc., through I2C and the main controller (such as MCU or development board) for data exchange. Memory device: such as EEPROM, Flash memory can read and write data through I2C.

Display: OLED, LCD and other display modules often use I2C interface to connect with the main controller. Embedded systems: In a variety of embedded systems, I2C acts as a communication bridge between devices to promote data exchange between different modules.

CONCLUSION

As an important serial communication protocol, I2C (Inter-Integrated Circuit) plays an indispensable role in modern electronic devices and embedded systems with its simplicity, flexibility and multi-device support. In many application scenarios, I2C provides an efficient solution for developers and is ideal for realizing low-speed communication between devices. As the technology evolves, I2C will also continue to be applied in a wider range of fields, driving the development of smart hardware.
