Construction and Working Principle

These indicators typically come with a temperature-sensing bulb that is placed in a pocket at the top of the transformer tank, filled with transformer oil. The sensing bulb is connected to the instrument housing by flexible connecting pipes composed of two capillary tubes. One capillary tube connects to the operating diaphragm box of the instrument, and the other connects to the compensating diaphragm box. The compensating diaphragm box compensates for changes in ambient temperature. The pointer is fixed on a steel slider, usually equipped with four mercury switches, the start-stop temperatures of which can be adjusted individually. One mercury switch is used to control cooling fans, one to activate the oil pump, one for high-temperature alarms, and the last one to cut off the transformer under extremely high-temperature conditions.

Oil Temperature Indicator (OTI)

The oil temperature indicator is used to measure the top oil temperature and is also used for the protection of the transformer. It uses the principle of liquid expansion through the capillary tubes by immersing the sensing bulb in the pocket. The connection and lever mechanism amplify this movement to the disc carrying the pointer and mercury switches. When there is a volume change in the operating mechanism's liquid, the diaphragm box at the end of the capillary tube expands and contracts, and this movement of the diaphragm box is transmitted to the pointer of the transformer temperature indicator through the lever connecting mechanism.

Winding Temperature Indicator (WTI)

The winding temperature indicator is used to measure the temperature of the low-voltage and high-voltage windings and also serves as a protective device for the transformer. Its working principle is to indirectly measure the winding temperature because it is dangerous to place sensors directly near the windings under high voltage. Indirect measurement is carried out through a special sensing bulb that is surrounded by heating resistance, heated by current proportional to the current passing through the transformer windings, and immersed in insulating oil with an oil temperature of Toil.

Routine Inspection and Maintenance

Temperature indicators require regular inspection and maintenance to ensure their good insulating properties and mechanical strength. Inspections include ensuring the effectiveness of the desiccant in the temperature indicator and checking that the contacts are clean and making good contact.
