How is power generation stored and transported?

Electricity itself cannot be stored at any scale, but it can be converted into other forms of energy, which can be stored and then converted into electricity when needed. Power storage systems include batteries, flywheels, compressed air, and pumped storage.

All systems are limited in the amount of energy they can store. Their energy and capacity are expressed in megawatt hours, and their power or maximum output at a given time is expressed in megawatt hours. The power storage system can be designed as an auxiliary service provided by the transmission system including frequency control. This is the primary role of grid scale batteries.
