What is the difference between emergency power supply and standby power supply?

According to the definition in NFPA 70: National Electrical Code (NEC), emergency and standby power supply systems are divided into three types: emergency power supply, statutory backup power supply and optional backup power supply.

The specification for operating systems critical to life safety requires emergency power supplies.

For systems that are not classified as requiring emergency power but whose failure may cause a hazard or hinder rescue or fire fighting operations, regulations require backup power as required by law.

The code does not need optional backup power supply, and provides backup power supply when life safety does not depend on the performance of the system.
