How to check whether the UPS battery is damaged?

The uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is crucial in ensuring the stability of the power supply of critical equipment, and the battery, the core component of the UPS, is directly related to its performance and reliability. Over time, UPS batteries may be damaged due to a variety of factors, and periodically checking the battery status is a necessary measure to ensure the normal operation of the system. This article describes how to effectively check the UPS battery for damage and provides some relevant recommendations.

main content

Appearance inspection

Observe whether the battery shell is damaged, leaking, protruding, cracking, exploding, burning and other phenomena. Check whether the battery cable is secure, loose, or corroded.

On-load measurement

If the UPS works in battery mode and carries a certain amount of load, if the discharge time is obviously shorter than the normal discharge time, the normal standby time cannot be restored after 8 hours of charging, and the battery is aging.

Measure with a multimeter

Measure the voltage of each battery terminal in the battery pack in battery discharge mode. If the voltage of one or more batteries is significantly higher or lower than the nominal voltage (nominal voltage 12V/ knot), the battery is aging.
Measure the charging voltage at each end of the battery pack in the mains mode. If the charging voltage of one or more batteries is significantly higher or lower than the other voltages, determine the aging of the battery.
Measure the total voltage of the battery pack, if the total voltage is significantly lower than the nominal value, it cannot be restored to the normal value after 8 hours of charging, even if it is restored to the normal value, the discharge time cannot reach the normal discharge time, and the battery aging is determined.

Battery startup measurement

UPS does not turn on, do not connect to the mains, first use a multimeter to measure the total voltage of the battery pack, do not leave the marker, always stare at the indicator of the multimeter, and then connect the power button, if the total voltage of the battery immediately drops below 30V or even more than ten volts, the UPS will automatically shut down immediately, and the voltage will immediately return to the original value after shutdown, to determine the aging of the battery.

Battery internal resistance measurement

Use a professional battery internal resistance measuring instrument to test the internal resistance of the battery to determine whether its internal resistance exceeds the allowable range. If the value exceeds the range, the battery is aging and needs to be repaired or replaced.

Simulated mains loss test

Consciously let the battery discharge to the DC bus, after normal operation, immediately restore the AC power supply, the battery should be able to automatically cut off the discharge circuit, to ensure that the UPS output is uninterrupted, simulated power loss test at least once every three months.

Annual checking discharge test

Check the capacity of the battery once a year to understand the actual operating capacity of the battery; The battery pack is activated once to make the battery capacity uniform.

CONCLUSION

By using the above method, you can effectively check whether the UPS battery is damaged, and repair or replace it in time to ensure the normal operation of the UPS system.
