The design, assembly and management of battery cells and modules are essential for the performance, safety, cost control and longevity of lithium battery packs. The modular design not only facilitates integration into large-scale energy storage systems, but also effectively improves the safety, reliability and flexibility of the system.

Battery units and modules

The monomer and module of a battery are the basic units of a battery pack. They each play an important role and work together in the whole battery system to achieve efficient, safe and stable energy storage and output. Understanding the function, structure, and working principle of battery cells and modules is essential for the design, management, and maintenance of battery systems, especially in the fields of electric vehicles (evs) and renewable energy storage systems.
A battery module is a unit composed of multiple battery cells (usually multiple single cells in series or parallel). The battery module is the middle layer of the battery pack, which connects multiple battery cells by serial and parallel ways, which can not only improve the voltage and capacity, but also facilitate management and maintenance.

Characteristics of battery cells

Voltage and capacity: Each battery cell usually has a fixed voltage value (such as a standard lithium battery cell of 3.7V), and the capacity of the battery is usually expressed in Ah (amperage), which represents the amount of charge it stored.
Performance parameters: The performance of a battery cell is mainly reflected in energy density (energy storage per unit volume or per unit mass), power density (power output per unit time), cycle life, and temperature range.

Characteristics of the battery module

Voltage and capacity: The voltage and capacity of a battery module are usually determined by the series and parallel combination of individual cells. The voltage of a battery module is generally the sum of the voltages of multiple battery cells, while the capacity of a module is the sum of the capacities of parallel battery cells.
Expandability: The battery module can be extended according to the need, and the modular design allows the capacity and power of the battery pack to be flexibly configured according to the actual demand, which is convenient for integration and maintenance.
Management and control: the battery management system (BMS) is usually integrated in the module, which is responsible for the state monitoring of the battery, charge and discharge management, balance protection, etc., to ensure the safe and efficient operation of each single battery in the module.

The relationship between cell and module

The relationship between a cell and a module can be analogous to the relationship between a single cell and a battery pack. Battery cells provide the basic voltage and capacity, and multiple battery cells are combined into battery modules through series and parallel, and then the whole battery pack is formed through the combination of multiple modules.
The role of the battery cell: The battery cell is the basic energy storage unit of the battery, providing the voltage, capacity and power output required by the battery pack. The performance of the battery unit (such as energy density, power density, charge and discharge efficiency, etc.) directly affects the performance of the whole battery pack.
